Nursing Student Scholarships were established in 1946 and have been one of the main beneficiaries from funds raised through various fundraising events. Nursing scholarships shall be given to candidates in either Bachelor of Science and/or Associate Degree in nursing programs in accredited schools of Nursing in Harris County. The candidates are selected by the HCMSA Nursing Scholarship Committee and approved by the Directors of Nursing of each school. The sum awarded shall be sent to the financial departments of the designated schools, and deposited in the recipient’s name and disbursed to the student as needed for nursing school related expenses.
Since 1998 the Harris County Medical Society Alliance has awarded close to $175,000 in scholarships to medical students. They are awarded equally between the two medical schools in Harris County, The UT Health Science Center at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine. Only third and fourth year medical students are eligible and are chosen by the Financial Aid Office of their schools.
Part of the money awarded comes from an endowed fund that was established by the Harris County Medical Society Alliance in the early 1980’s. Over a two-year period $50,000 was contributed to establish an endowed fund. It started as a medical student loan fund. In the 1990’s it was decided to change this endowed fund to a scholarship program. Our first scholarships were awarded in 1998.
The Fund is part of the Texas Medical Association family of Loan and Scholarship Funds. It is one of the largest scholarship programs for medical students in these groups.
